HKB, 2025
During my apprenticeship as a print media designer (polygrapher) in a small print shop in Bern, I spoke almost daily with a former female typesetter. These encounters sparked my early interest in the history of the graphic trades. When I attended a course at the letterpress workshop Officina Helvetica in 2024, I increasingly began to wonder how the role of women in the typesetting profession developed during a time of social and technological change.
Over the course of my research, it became clear how little archived and processed material exists on this topic. Several archives pointed out gaps in their collections, and existing film material had not yet been digitized. In my theoretical work, I conducted conversations with two former female typesetters and connected their memories with the insights from my research.
