The German term Schubladisieren refers to the act of placing people, ideas, or things into predefined categories, often with the tendency to oversimplify or reduce their complexity.
This project explores the concept of categorization, both in its literal and metaphorical sense. The starting point is letterpress – a traditional system based on order and classification, in which each letter has its fixed place in the drawer. An essay written by Lena Thomma was set in metal type, scanned, enlarged, and stretched to the edges of the format – or beyond. The characters are torn from their original context and stripped of their rigid structure. This disruption thematizes the process of breaking free from fixed categories and allows for a fresh, unprejudiced view of each individual character.
